About LAMP BAR

Concept

LAMP BAR, located in Nara, is a bar operated by the renowned bartender, Michito Kaneko. The bar’s concept, “around the world,” is expressed through three unique spaces: the “Main Room,” representing the origins of cocktails; the “Traveling Room,” inspired by trunks used for transporting alcohol; and the “Mirror Room,” reflecting the history of alcohol. At LAMP BAR, you can enjoy cocktails made with Nara’s local ingredients and innovative, creative concoctions. Its uniqueness and high-level skills have earned it high praise both domestically and internationally.

World’s Best Bartender

In 2015, Kaneko won the prestigious global bartender competition “WORLD CLASS 2015,” becoming known as the world’s best bartender. After starting his career at the age of 20, Kaneko trained at bars in Wakayama and Nara before opening LAMP BAR in Nara City in 2011. Kaneko brings a unique approach to cocktail making by incorporating local Nara ingredients into his creations.

Bar Recognition

LAMP BAR has consistently ranked on the “Asia’s 50 Best Bars” list, achieving 23rd place in the “Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2023.” It has become a renowned bar in Japan, offering world-class cocktails and hospitality in Nara, a regional city.

Bar Prelude

Bar Area

The Main Room of LAMP BAR is designed around the theme of how alcohol originated from alchemy. The space includes counter seats as well as sofas for groups, offering versatility for different settings. Additionally, the Main Room features a “Trunk Room,” a speakeasy-style hidden space where guests can enjoy an exclusive atmosphere.

Instead of a fixed menu, the bar offers cocktails based on the guests’ preferences and moods.

Actual Drinks Tasted

Lamp Negroni

A Negroni made with house-made Campari, infused with grapefruit peel and Nara’s hinoki wood, resulting in a deep and rich flavor.

The Beginning

A cocktail inspired by the birth of life, originally served at the “WORLD CLASS 2015” competition. It combines two types of whiskey, smoky tea syrup, marmalade, lemon juice, and saltwater, served in an egg-shaped vessel. The presentation includes burning cinnamon on the bottom of the vessel to impart the spice’s aroma. The vessel is a creation of Kaneko’s parents, who are also potters.

Summary & Impressions

LAMP BAR offers an extraordinary experience where enjoying a cocktail becomes an art form. The story, aroma, and presentation of each drink are carefully crafted, creating a uniquely immersive atmosphere.
