Journey to Nagasu Port, Kumamoto
From Fukuoka City, it takes about an hour and a half by car to reach Nagasu Port in Kumamoto Prefecture. This port is where ferries depart for crossing the Ariake Sea. From Nagasu Port, you can move on while enjoying a view of the calm sea.
At Nagasu Port Terminal, you can enjoy a bit of shopping or some delicious food before departure.
Ariake Ferry Website
It also supports online reservations.
From Fukuoka City to Nagasu Port takes about 1.5 hours by car, and to Kumamoto Port takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes.
If you’re traveling from the Kanto area using the Shinkansen or other means, Kumamoto Port is more convenient, but if you’re driving from Fukuoka City, I personally recommend Nagasu Port.
By the way, it’s about 40 minutes to Taira Port, but if you use the Kumamoto Ferry from Kumamoto Port, you’ll reach Shimabara Port in about 30 minutes.
Ariake Ferry to the Shimabara Peninsula (Taira Port)
Follow the instructions, and once you’re on board with your car, you will disembark and move inside the ship.
Seagull Watching
After boarding the Ariake Ferry at Nagasu Port, we head to Taira Port on the Shimabara Peninsula.
The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes. From winter to spring, during this limited period, the “seagull watching” event has become a popular tradition, where you can observe seagulls flying around the ferry up close.
As we approach the destination, an announcement will be made, so we return to our cars and wait.
Even here, the seagulls, like guides, seem to lead us toward our destination.
A 20-Minute Drive
Upon arriving at Taira Port on the Shimabara Peninsula, it’s about a 20-minute drive to the destination restaurant.
Leaving Taira Port, on the left, you’ll see the vast Ariake Sea spread out.
After about 10 minutes, you’ll pass through Kunimi Town, located in the northern part of the Shimabara Peninsula.
This town is nationally known for its prestigious soccer school, Kunimi High School, and you can see soccer-related monuments and facilities scattered around the town.
Enjoy the townscape, which blends history and sports culture, while looking at the tranquil rural landscape, schools, and local shopping streets.
After passing Kunimi Town, the vast rural landscape stretches out to the left.
You can enjoy seasonal views of the fields, and further ahead, you’ll see Mount Unzen-Fugen.
The Breathtaking Omisaki Station
On the left, you’ll see Omisaki Station.
This station is known as one of the closest stations to the sea in Japan, and the view of the Ariake Sea stretching out in front of the platform is stunning.
If you have time, it’s a must-visit spot.
Filming Location for McDonald’s CM
The Omisaki Station was used as a filming location for McDonald’s “McShake® Calpis®” commercial, which aired from June 7, 2022. The station also appeared in the commercial for “McFlurry® Rich Mango & Calpis®” that aired on July 5 of the same year.
Following the commercials, a collaboration with Shimabara Railway led to the operation of the “McDonald’s Train,” and McDonald’s posters were displayed at the station, contributing to local revitalization efforts.
One particularly popular spot is the “Wishing Station” adorned with yellow handkerchiefs. Visitors write their messages on the yellow handkerchiefs, creating a symbolic and serene atmosphere, enhanced by the sound of waves.
Arrival at Pesceco
After leaving Omisaki Station, continue on until you reach the North Gate intersection, which marks the entrance to Shimabara City.
Make a left turn here, and you’ll find yourself back along the coastline, leading to the restaurant “Pesceco.”
Pesceco is located along the coast, offering not only excellent seafood but also an unforgettable experience with its fresh ingredients and unique, creative dishes.

OSAKANA INOUE
Next to Pesceco is a fresh fish shop owned by Chef Inoue’s father. Inside, fresh seafood is displayed, and the quality of the products is directly reflected in the dishes at Pesceco.
Fish such as conger eel and squid purchased from the shop can be enjoyed in their purest form, offering an exceptional flavor. Both the fresh fish shop and Pesceco’s cuisine provide an unforgettable experience.
A Story of Gratitude
hef Inoue and his father originally started the restaurant business together. Without ever going to formal culinary training, Chef Inoue learned his craft independently. His father supported him by purchasing expensive cookbooks, investing in his passion for cooking, and fostering his growth.
Now, Chef Inoue has created a space for his father, who runs the neighboring fish shop, allowing the father to watch over his son’s successful career. The father proudly speaks of his son, illustrating the deep bond between them.
This story of love and dedication is what fills Pesceco with its special atmosphere.
Pesceco as a Destination for Shimabara Travel
For those looking to enjoy the rich nature and cuisine of Nagasaki and the Shimabara Peninsula, Pesceco is the ideal destination.
The restaurant offers delicate and creative dishes made with local ingredients, truly reflecting the unique essence of the region. Each dish from Chef Inoue embodies Shimabara’s natural bounty and his culinary philosophy.
A trip centered around a meal at Pesceco, while exploring Shimabara’s beautiful landscapes, hot springs, and historic streets, will undoubtedly be a memorable experience.
